In Mirada al 8M, we will be looking at what occurred during the Día Internacional de las Mujeres Trabajadoras (International Woman’s Day) in Argentina and Puerto Rico. March 8 is a very important day for feminists, women in all their diversities, LGBTQ+ community, and allies because it serves to remind the government, people, and other institutions that women are still fighting for their basic human rights and that it will not be solved with indifference.
In this event, we will hear feminists from Argentina and Puerto Rico talk about the events that occurred in each country on that day and then open the discussion with the public about their demands and how does it compares and contrasts with the International Woman’s Day in other parts of the world. In the end, there will be a “pancartada”, where we will make banners and posters demonstrating our support or voicing our own individual or collective demands. The “pancartas” will be displayed in Paresky.
❖ March 16 @ 4:30 PM | Paresky Auditorium
What is going on?
In Puerto Rico, feminist movements are challenging the predominant racial, sexist, homo- and trans-phobic conservative, liberal, and neoliberal politics of today. Their demands include access to healthcare, the audit of the economic debt, reparations, less poverty, and action against feminicides and transfemicides. They are also fighting against colonial and imperial impositions and remind Puerto Rican society and the United States that those are not a matter of the past and are active in women’s daily lives.
In Argentina, women and the LGBTQ+ communities are tired of inequality and patriarchy, they will be claiming for the FMI to leave Argentina and Latin America. Also, they are denouncing femicides and transfemicides to stop. The economic debt Argentina has was made by oligarchs and feminists are demanding they are the ones to pay it. Women, lesbians, trans and travestis will be singing in the streets: “Vivas, libres, con agua, techo, tierra nos queremos!”/ “We want to be alive, free and have water, roof and earth!”
