All are invited to a free screening of “The Settlers” (“Los colonos”, Chile, 2023). The film takes place in the early years of the 20th century and follows the journey of José Menéndez, a wealthy landowner, who hires three horsemen to mark out the perimeter of his property and open a route to the Atlantic Ocean across vast Patagonia. A New York Times Critic’s Pick, Felipe Gálvez’s first feature film depicts, unsparingly, the horrors of the genocide against the Selk’nam people and the violence of the exploitation and colonization of Tierra del Fuego. The film screening is free, open to the public, and English subtitles are provided.
This event is made possible with the support of Romance Languages, the Center for Environmental Studies, the Global Studies program, and the Oakley Center, and the Center for Global Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
