"The Indomitable Zatoichi"

ZatoichiThe Japanese Program is proud to present films of the legendary and indomitable Zatoichi. Neither samurai nor ronin but a masseur by trade and a blind swordsman extraordinaire. Though a meek and humble man, he is indeed a champion of the downcast and defenseless, who wanders aimlessly about the countryside and towns as a lone, solitary figure in the Edo Era. He seems so vulnerable, so helpless, so in need of protection himself, but this is a mask, for once his blade is drawn from his cane, the skills of this sightless fighter appear almost magical and wondrous, against any and all assailants, so peerless are they.
Zatoichi’s emergence and endurance in 25 films and 26 episodes in a television series, have been as entertaining as they have been an enduring saga in postwar Japanese media history. Please join us for enjoyable screenings of the remarkable “Ichi,” Saturday and Sunday.
