DAVID CRANDALL began studying noh chant and dance in 1979 with noh master Sano Hajime of the Hosho school. In 1986 he was admitted as an apprentice at the Hosho Noh Theatre in Tokyo, studying with Hosho Fusateru, the 19th head of the Hosho school.
Mr. Crandall is a founding member of Theatre Nohgaku, a company dedicated to creating and performing new plays in English using noh performance techniques. As a playwright and composer, he has written noh-inspired dance dramas, children’s musicals, and film scores, while maintaining an active performance and workshop schedule both in the US and Japan.
