Deeply Rooted in the Present: Contemporary Street Art and Palimpsest Memories on Reunion Island

Magali Compan, Associate Professor of French at William and Mary, will speak about contemporary street art in Reunion Island. How are previous colonial spaces and their relationship to the past affected by their place in the contemporary world of post-modernity, consumerism, and global capital? In the global move from diversity to uniformity, how does memory get constructed, reconstructed, and sustained? During this talk, Compan will explore these questions through the case of Reunion Island and the work of two of its contemporary street artists, Kid Kreol and Boogie.
