“Martin Luther King Jr. as Us: the Ghetto Portraits” Photographer Camilo José Vergara will give the keynote address for the Martin Luther King Day events on campus. Vergara has been a self-appointed “curator of the streets,” documenting murals, signs, and billboards in American inner cities over the past four decades. His photographs capture the need for heroes and heroines in today’s American society. The works are ephemeral and point to the importance of tracking popular expressions of urban life and culture, which would otherwise not be found in any official historical records. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. (Jan. 7, 2011) in the Paresky Center Theater.
