Spanish Language Certificate (Application Deadline: March 10)
2016 Linen Summer Grants for Study in Asia
Supported by an endowment for Asian Studies established by family and friends in memory of James A. Linen III, Class of 1934, the Department of Asian Studies offers a limited number of grants to assist Williams College undergraduates in traveling to Asia during the summer for educational purposes. For the purposes of these grants, “Asia” refers to South, Southeast, and East Asia, defined as those parts of the continent east of the Khyber Pass and south and east of the Tian Shan Mountains and the Gobi Desert. 2016 Taiwan Ministry of Education Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship (HES)
Through the generosity of the Taiwan Ministry of Education and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO), the Department of Asian Studies at Williams College has been awarded a scholarship for one Williams student to study Mandarin language in Taiwan during 2016-2017. Williams-in-China Fellowships (2016)
The fellowship is a one-year position, with a possibility of a second year, if the candidate and the University so desire. The work begins in late August. Teaching duties are divided between United College, where Fellows lead their own class in English Conversation, and one of several departments, where Fellows act as Teaching Assistants in a regular course. Williams pays $7000, divided in June and January installments. CUHK adds approximately HK$ 10,000 in monthly salary and a campus apartment that you share with the other Williams person and, possibly, another US fellow. Fellows can, at no additional expense, take Chinese language courses at CUHK, which are encouraged but not required. Fellows are responsible for their own health insurance. Continue reading »
China Government Scholarship
Since September 2008 through the goodwill of the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York, the Department of Asian Studies at Williams College has been invited to nominate two Williams students to receive a “Chinese Government Scholarship” to study in China. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships (Deadline: Feb. 9, 2016)
The applications for the 2016-2017 David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available at borenawards.org. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations. Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Hindi, Mandarin, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. SALAM 2016: Summer Arabic Language & Media Program (Deadline: Jan. 10, 2016)
The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) is delighted to announce its 2016 Summer Arabic Language and Media (SALAM) program, a fully-funded intensive Arabic language scholarship program in the Sultanate of Oman. SQCC supports Arabic language study for U.S. students through its annual SALAM program. This intensive Arabic language program will allow students to gain a deeper knowledge of Arabic, while becoming familiar with Omani history and culture. Continue reading »
