Members of the class, Spanish in Action: Advanced Culture and Communication for Everyday Life (RLSP 199), and Professor Ringer-Hilfinger invite you to visit the exhibit of the book, La diversidad entre los hispanohablantes en los Berkshires. The display includes a hardcopy version (courtesy of the Publication Studio at WCMA) and a digital copy with sound clips from the oral interviews.

The French Program at Williams College is hosting with the Consulate of France, Boston a meeting for area teachers of French. Williams professors Brian Martin, Kashia Pieprzak, Annelle Curulla, Nicole Desrosiers, and Sophie Saint-Just will present "Un tableau des ressources locales pour faire vivre le français." This Café Français will provide area teachers with resources to help enliven French curriculums and culture in their local environments and an opportunity to network. Continue reading »
Students have been engaged in a wide-variety of cultural activities this semester using their language skills creatively to reenact intellectual debates in 19th century Russia (19th Century Russian Literature class joined with history class Muscovy and the Russian Empire) ; prepare and partake in a typical Egyptian breakfast (Elementary Arabic); celebrate the Oktoberfest with food and dance (all students in German); participate in a workshop with DAM, a Palestinian hiphop group (Pop Culture in the Arab World); present skits in Arabic accompanied by delicious Moroccan and Palestinian food (Intermediate Arabic); learn a few bachata steps in between tastes of Spanish tapas and Argentinian empanadas (all Spanish classes); enjoy each others cooking at the annual Russian potluck feast (all students in Russian); study LaFontaine fables with actress Emmanuelle Delpech (Intermediate French); and relive study abroad in Spanish-speaking countries with a sampling of wine and cheese from Latin America and Spain. The Arabic Program at Williams held an evening “Celebrating Arabic Spring” on November 3, 2011.
The event started by socializing with the guests over delicious Arabic refreshments and sweets. Professors Vargas and Khattab then introduced Arabic Spring, an occasion to celebrate with poetry originating in the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and other countries in the Middle East. Students from all levels of Arabic study recited a selection of revolutionary poems and songs and native speakers, Mustafa M., Fulbright TA from Libya, and Omer, international student from Jordan, recited poems by Libyan Abdurrahman Alashmaw and Egyptian Mahmoud Darwish. The evening ended on a high note with a rap song in English titled “Libya Bleed” performed by two 101 students. Continue reading »
