This conference, held on April 16, 2016, invited students to share their research that highlights the ways in which Spanish-speaking communities and the US collaborate, mingle and become intertwined. The program included “Presence and Absence in Argentina’s 'Dirty War’” by Natalie Wilkinson ’19, "Third Wave of US Colonialism" by Luís Beltrán and "The Future of Terrorism" by Professor Micahel Martínez-Raguso. The Spanish TAs - Laura Álvarez Trigo, Luis Beltrán Álvarez and Dominique Roberts, organized the conference with the goal of promoting the Spanish language and enabling cultural exchange. During the Winter Study Program, the beginner students of Spanish worked on a project based on the influence of Spanish in the US. The students went on a field trip to New York, did research on various topics and with the guide of the Teaching Associates Laura Alvarez, Luis Beltrán and Dominique Roberts recorded a radio program as the final project. On October 21, 2015 the German Department hosted the annual Oktoberfest with Bavarian food, drinks, music and dancing. The students in German classes also organized festivities in each of the dining halls. The dining hall with the most beautiful decorations (Paresky - decorated by German 101) received a prize later at the department's private Oktoberfest in Dodd. On April 24th, under the direction of Emmanuelle Delpech of Pig Iron Theatre Company, students from French 326 presented micro-scenes from Molière’s seventeenth-century comedies. The Puerto Rican music ensemble Los Pleneros de la 21 came to Williams for a concert-performance of bomba music and dance. The musicians and singers easily connected with the crowd and the beat of the drums beckoned everyone to dance for the entire evening. Some brave souls even tried a few bomba moves, and the group ended the night with lively plena song about their cariño for Puerto Rico. The performance was a wonderful way to highlight a vibrant culture and musical genre that has a rich transnational trajectory from Africa to Puerto Rico to Spanish Harlem (NYC) to Williamstown!
